Bricks have been in use constantly for more than nine millennia. Today, the appreciation for their versatile application, construction qualities, and energy efficiency remains unbroken. Founded in Vienna in 1819, Wienerberger AG today is the world’s biggest manufacturer of bricks and other clay building materials.

Since 2004, Wienerberger has presented a biannual international Brick Award to recognize outstanding achievements in brick architecture. For the 2018 edition, more than six hundred realized designs from forty-four countries were submitted in the categories Feeling at Home, Living Together, Working Together, Sharing Public Spaces, and Building Outside the Box. This book presents the winning and shortlisted designs through concise descriptions accompanied by atmospheric images, site and floor plans, views and elevations, and sections. Five topical essays by Sandy Attia, Patricia Barbas, Marcos Parga, Wolfgang Pauser, and Mikko Summanen round out this celebration of contemporary brick architecture.

Authors & Editors

Sandy Attia

 is an architect who runs her own studio MoDus Architects in Brixen, Italy, together with Matteo Scagnol das Büro. She also teaches at various international schools of architecture, including the University of Michigan’s in Ann Arbor, MI.

Patrícia Barbas

 is an architect and founding partner of Barbas Lopes Arquitectos in Lissabon. 2013–16, she has taught as visiting professor at Carleton University in Ottawa.

Wojciech Czaja

 is a Vienna-based architect and freelance publicist, contributing to various daily and weekly newspapers and magazines. He also teaches at Vienna’s University of Applied Arts and works as a moderator in the field of urban culture and architecture.

Christian Holl

 is an architect and a curator and member of the exhibition committee of Architekturgalerie am Weissenhof ins Stuttgart since 2008. He also works as a freelance writer, editor and critic, and held teaching assignments in Darmstadt, Stuttgart, Wuppertal, Kaiserslautern and Frankfurt (Main). Since 2017, is co-publisher of online magazine marlowes.de.

Marcos Parga

 is an architect and founder of architectural firm MAPAA in Madrid. He also works as editor-in-chief of Spanish magazine 115Días holds an appointment as Assistant Professor at Syracuse University’s School of Architecture in Syracuse, NY.

Wolfgang Pauser

 lives and works in Vienna as a writer, publicist, and cultural consultant.

Mikko Summanen

 is an architect and founding partner of K2S Architects in Helsinki. He also teaches as professor of building technology Helsinki’s Aalto University.

Jan Peter Wingender

 is an architect and founding partner with Amstardam-based Office Winhov. 2003–07, he was head of Amsterdam Academy of Architecture’s architecture study program, since 2010 he teaches architecture at Amsterdam University of the Arts.
