The work of American artist Kiki Smith, born 1954, is a meditation on the body. Smith observes every aspect of corporal materiality and the conditions that shape our life on earth: physically, spiritually, and politically, but also with regard to emotive categories like control and disgust. Her earlier work often fragmented the body into organs, fluids, and senses. Later, she depicted it as an envelope. Yet in her most recent art she has taken a step back to evoke mankind’s relationship with its environment. Smith uses a wide range of materials and techniques, with a particular interest in the fragility and expressive potential of paper and its resemblance to human skin.

This book, published to coincide with an exhibition at Musée Cantonal des Beaux-arts in Lausanne, Switzerland, offers a survey of some forty years of Kiki Smith’s art making, exmining in particular the sensory dimension of her output.. Richly illustrated, the book confronts the reader with their own body and invites reflection on their role within the entire world.

L’œuvre de Kiki Smith, née en 1954, est une méditation sur le corps. L’artiste américaine l’observe dans toutes ses matérialités et dans toutes les conditions qui font son passage terrestre, qu’il soit politique, spirituel, domestique, charnel, vil, universel, etc. Alors qu’elle s’est d’abord attachée à le fragmenter (organes, fluides, sens), elle l’a ensuite appréhendé comme une enveloppe – notamment en portant un intérêt particulier à la fragilité et à l’expressivité du papier qui évoque la peau –, avant d’aborder la relation de l’être humain aux mondes animal et végétal et au cosmos.

Cette publication abondamment illustrée traite spécialement de la dimension sensorielle de l’œuvre de Kiki Smith, qui fait la démonstration du caractère actif de la perception, que ce soit en exacerbant les sens ou en reconfigurant leur hiérarchie, créant en quelque sorte une situation synesthésique. Par l’observation attentive des œuvres et de leurs matériaux, le public est invité à méditer sur sa propre expérience du corps et sur sa relation à son environnement.
